Statistics Computer Host Descriptions

There are many different machines which provide different services. This is a list of different hostnames and their purposes. For host complete names add .stat.ohio-state.edu.

Unix Login / Compute Machines:

  • mordor or linux or unix (linux is its simplier alias)
    The public linux login machine. Runs XDM. Compute jobs are not allowed on this machine.

  • rohan
    A linux compute machine. Dual AMD Opteron 248, 4GB RAM.

  • gondor
    A linux compute machine. Dual AMD Opteron 248, 4GB RAM.

  • rivendell
    A linux compute machine. Dual AMD Athlon MP 1800+, 3GB RAM.

  • shire
    A linux compute machine. Dual AMD Athlon MP 1800+, 3GB RAM.

Windows Login / Compute Machines:

  • melomel
    A Windows machine available for remote use with Remote Desktop. Dual AMD Opteron 248, 4GB RAM.

  • braggott
    A Windows machine available for remote use with Remote Desktop. Dual AMD Opteron 248, 4GB RAM.

Services: These are not login machines, but provide important services.

  • trad (pcserver is its simplier alias)
    A Windows machine providing file and print services.

  • mail
    The host to use for incoming and outgoing mail server.

  • ftp
    The host holding our anonymous ftp files and drop boxes.

  • ntp
    The local time synchronization server.
