Welcome!

Steve MacEachern is Distinguished Arts & Sciences Professor of Statistics at The Ohio State University.  He received his BA in Mathematics from Carleton College in 1982 and his PhD in Statistics from the University of Minnesota in 1988 under the guidance of Don Berry.  He joined Ohio State in 1988 and served as Chair of the Statistics Department from 2015 through 2023.  He has a courtesy appointment in Psychology.  He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the International Society for Bayesian Analysis, and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.  He served as President of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis in 2016.

Steve’s research interests focus on the development of statistical models and methods to fit them, evaluation of the adequacy and deficiencies of models, and investigation of novel methods of inference.  Much of his work is Bayesian, and his most well-known contributions are in the area of Bayesian nonparametrics, an area that has impacted machine learning as well as statistics.  He is concerned with the gap between reality and formal statistical models, and with this, the robustness of models and inference.  He has worked on computational methods (especially Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms), penalized likelihood methods, and the broad area of ranked set sampling.
